Negotiation in Dungeons and Dragons. It is a lost art. Most adventurers either fight or flee. And as my previous post said….they rarely choose option two. To most adventurers negotiation in Dungeons and Dragons makes them feel like this:
Negotiating for passage
It is not just Trolls that often demand tribute for crossing bridges or passing through hostile dungeons and tunnels. Sometimes orcs, beholders and other nasty creatures have their hands out. One may have to pay a bribe once in a while in order to stay alive. But this rarely happens in the games I have played in in recent years. Most adventurers would prefer to do this instead.
Negotiating for other things
Passage is not the only subject of negotiation in Dungeons and Dragons. Some other possibilities:
- To stay alive
- For a prisoner
- For magic items and treasures
- Information
- Alliance
- Assistance on some quest
- Magical assistance
- Healing
Negotiation is a forgotten art
Role playing is not always about rolling the dice….slaying creatures…..and stealing treasures…. It is sometimes about role playing. And what could be better role play than a negotiation with this guy.
