In my endless journey to build my miniature collection I found these two sets from the same company: Path Gaming.
Each of these sets comes with 40 pieces with 10 designs. You get four of each pieces. These sets come with a lot of useful Dungeons and Dragons creatures such as: Yeti, Mimics (as chests), Cockatrice, Gnolls, something that could be an Orc, Hobgoblin or similar creature, something that could be a flesh or stone golem, something that looks like a human sized shambling mound, a Pied Piper looking guy I use as a bard, Mind Flayers, Kobold looking guys riding a lizard, and some other interesting pieces.
Each set costs $25. That is less than a $1 per piece.
These pieces are to scale and paint well. I have painted most of them but have kind of slacked off on the ones that I did not see any immediate need for in my games.

In my endless quest for cheap miniatures I found another great set which is worth taking a look at if you are also interested in buying alternatives to the expensive official Dungeons and Dragons sets, Pathfinder Sets or even the Reaper ones. Those are all great minis but all get rather expensive when you start buying more than one at a time.
This set is called DRUNK’N DRAGON DND Enemies. It has twenty five pieces in the set for about $25 dollars. That is about $1 a piece. These minis are to scale and offer some really good variations for a collection.
Some of the monster choices include: lizard men, cultists, bandits, two versions of goblns, what the maker calls orcs but I say look more like ogres and something I would say looks like a Jackalwere, five of each creature.

In my endless quest to build up a great set of miniatures at a more reasonable price than buying official Dungeons and Dragons minis I found another great set on Amazon.com that is worth taking a look at. This set is called the Wildspire Fantasy Miniature Set. These pieces are pretty much to scale except that it includes a couple of really interesting pieces which are large minis. These could still be to the scale that you want. You kind of have to look at them to see what I am talking about.
The main piece is a huge dragon reading from a book. Presumably he might be casting a spell or perhaps he is just bored. In any case he has a bit of a beard and presumably is an Ancient Red Dragon. Of course……You could paint him any color you want to. The picture on the box had a red dragon so that is how I painted him myself.
That piece alone is pretty awesome. It also comes with some demons, were rats, mushroom men (myconids I guess), a barrel guy who I guess could be treated as a mimic if you want a D&D connection, some turtle guy carrying a cannon which I do not see as too D&D related, goblins, one massive demon or devil guy who is also a very cool looking piece and one unique creature which I would call a Wereshark or something and one big lamia.
At any rate you get four of each of the small pieces and one of the four bigger pieces. The total price is $44 for 68 total pieces.
The pieces paint well. They are to scale. And they provide several interesting designs which will add quite a bit to your collection if you choose to go this route.
